Our journey into beneficial microbes began in 2009 through the equine world, veterinary collaboration, and a fascination with the relationship between gut health and overall wellbeing.

What started with curiosity eventually became Plusbac — a company focused on supporting animals through carefully developed microbial feed materials designed to work in harmony with the digestive system.

Founder Story

I first became fascinated by beneficial microbes back in 2008.

At the time, very few people were talking about the microbiome or gut health in the way they do today. I can’t fully explain why it captured my interest so strongly — perhaps because it felt new, mysterious, and instinctively important. Something told me there was real potential in it.

That curiosity ended up taking me on a remarkable journey.

In 2009, I heard that the famous Spanish Riding School in Vienna were using beneficial microbes in the feed of their Lipizzaner horses. Wanting to see it for myself, I travelled to Austria and visited the school directly. It turned out to be completely true. The Professor of feed explained that because the horses travelled so frequently, the microbes helped maintain their condition and temperament during travel….. happy gut, happy mind! …and everything else falls into place more easily following that.

That visit gave me the confidence to bring the product to the UK and set up Plusbac in 2010.

My first conversation was with my wife, Emma, who is an equine vet. She agreed to trial the microbes on a horse she had been struggling to help over a long period of time. The horse had severe diarrhoea, significant weight loss, and was close to being put down. It really was last chance saloon. Almost unbelievably, after only five days, she came home and announced that the horse’s stools had normalised, it had started gaining weight, and its condition was visibly improving. Emma felt this had to be because of the addition of Plusbac Feed to its feed

That was the moment everything changed for us.

Over the following months, she trialled the microbes with other horses and encouraged me to meet one of the country’s leading equine gastroenterology specialists, Mr Richard Hepburn BVSc MS(Hons) CertEM(IntMed) DipACVIM FRCVS ABVS & RCVS Recognised Specialist in Equine Internal Medicine

Richard immediately understood why the product was different.

He explained that our microbes were a live liquid commensal mix, meaning they can establish more easily in the gut making them fundamentally different from many powders and pastes already on the market. He began trialling the product extensively and later told me he was highly encouraged by the results he was seeing through scoping and clinical observation.

To this day, he still regards it as the leading product of its kind and has kindly recommended it to several other Vet practices to include B and W Equine Vets, Tomlinson Equine vets, Lambourn Equine Vets, Gibbs Marsh Vets, George Vets, Birgit Ahlemeyer.and more.

From there, we slowly began working with other professionals including Olympic Gold medal winning horses as well as studs, racing yards, and performance horses across the UK. We became FEI compliant early on with advice from our Vets treating competition horses, and uniquely registered the bacteria with the EFSA in 2025. The product is Organic.

Today we have crossed into the public domain more prominently and have an excellent relationship with our wonderful customers who show their views on Plusbac Google reviews and Trustpilot.

What started as curiosity and instinct gradually evolved into something much bigger and the journey into optimum gut health continues.
